Play To Win

By Mikel R. Virdell…recording the history of the Fighting Llano Yellowjackets since 1973.

I The Yellowjackets second win of the 2007 season was another sound victory, and another sound outing by junior quarterback Trey Brooks.
Brooks has now completed 6 of 8 passes in two games, for 91 yards. But more important are the quality of the tosses. Three touchdowns, all to junior receiver Walker Woolman. At this pace, the Jackets are not apt to break any records passing, but few things are more effective in a run offense like Llanos’, than enough passes to keep opposing linebackers thinking.

And while the passing game is but a small part of this effort, the running game is running a full speed. The neck injury during pre-game drills of Ty Thurman was worrisome; it was safe at this early part of the season to let him rest. Senior Austin Freeman did a yeoman’s job, carrying 14 times for 93 yards. Senior Lance Dickey ran 12 times for 97 yards. The Jacket running game had 43 carries for 274 yards, a 6.3 yards per carry. Winning football.

Interest to some may be the fact that Marble Falls won this past weekend, coming back in week two, after their first week loss in Llano.
Llano kicked off to the Indians, and the next 10 plays saw the visitors go down to the Jacket 4 yard line before Llano’s defense held. Very good plays by Michael Anderson, Tye Siegenthaler, and Dickey, along with senior Cody Fietz were able to finally bring the drive to an end.
Llano then drove 14 plays; all running the football over lineman Seth Hensley and Andrew Ratliff blocks to put Llano on the 19 yard line, but a fumble ended this drive. Yet on the first play for the Indians, a stuffing line caused a fumble and Freeman picked it up and scored to put Llano up 7-0.

The Indians had two more chances with the football in the first half. Both efforts were three and out. Senior Kyle Frizell, Robert Haines with a quarterback sack, big senior Sam Whitaker, and senior Jared Francis were the playmakers holding Comanche to 80 yards in the half, with 43 of those on one pass play. Very strong defensive football. Llano lead 13-0 after the Jackets drove to the one yard line, and Brooks found Woolman for his second TD catch of the season. Runs by senior Wes Regmund picked up two Jacket first downs in the drive, as well as Wes caught a swing pass in the same drive.

Llano ran up the score to 19-0 with only 5 plays needed after the second half kickoff. A fake punt ended 35 yards later for the TD by Austin Freeman.

Comanche came right back, with a 7 play drive and a TD. Logan Davis at linebacker started making plays, and as did senior Seth Simpson, Justin Logan, Taylor Maddox, Feitz, and Regmund. The Jackets were starting to mold into a definable defense. You could begin to see and anticipate who would step forward with a big play. Friday night’s game was a very good beginning. Other Jackets contributed also, and time will see more stepping forward to be heard.

Llano lost in Llano last year to a very good Lexington team. The 2006 Eagles were 12-3, and after last Friday night, do not appear to be any less. Lexington lost to # 1 Mart by a touchdown. This game in Lexington will be great test for Llano. The two and ½ hour trip for some will be distracting. The experience of the Jacket seniors should take care of that problem. Llano will have to play extremely well to beat this very good and highly ranked team. Llano can win, if it keeps it miscues to a minimum. Llano had only one penalty last week. That kind of discipline will be the key to beating Lexington.
