Play To Win

By Mikel R. Virdell…recording the history of the Fighting Llano Yellowjackets since 1973.

The 2007 Llano Yellowjackets carry a good 5-2 record into District play
Friday night against the Ingram Warriors. But good is not where this senior dominated football team wants to be. They want to be remembered.

This team knows what happened last season. The Jackets beat Ingram, and with a long sigh of relief, lost the next two district contest and finished third.

It is no secret that this team is pretty good. But fine tuning their skills this week becomes crucial.

Beating a team like Ingram with its problems will bring little satisfaction unless Llano improves in all areas of its own game. Penalties, fumbles, and poor blocking decisions can be improved this week. Llano’s defense shut-out Ingram last year. That goal is realistic Friday night.
As things look after week 7, everyone on Llano’s schedule this season, with the exception of Comanche, will make the play-offs. The Jackets schedule should have them prepared to win the mental game. Beating Ingram is a must. Beating them by playing their best game only gets them ready to beat Bandera the next week.

If anyone is counting, Ingram has beat Llano 2 of the past 5 games. Preparing mentally Is just as important as being in good physical shape.
The seniors of 2007 seem to me to be wanting more than just a play-off run. So I will give an early play-off projection. This may be considered by some to play to the jinx. I do not believe in such things.

So here goes. Llano will win the next two games. And then the final game of the season, Llano will travel to Wimberley and beat the defending district champion on their own field. That has not
happened since 2001.

With Llano at 8-2, they will play a better opponent than in years past. And will win again.

Taking a 9-2 record into the 12th game of the season, Llano wins for only the second time in history at this level.

Headed to the 13th game, matching the great 1973 team, coached by
legendary Ken Gray. Llano ended that season at 9-3-1. Llano, by winning this game, would have a 11-2 record, matching the most wins ever in a season by a Jacket team, and playing in the 14th game of the year.

There are only 8 teams left playing in December at this point.
The 2007 Yellowjackets have the talent, and the coaching to do all of the above. And from this day forward, all success will come by way which teams can prepare best mentally, and the teams that can play one game at a time. This happens when seniors show leadership. This happens when senior place all else aside for the next 8 weeks, and help focus their team on smart play, and controlled play. This happens when Llano does not look ahead, and beats Ingram this Friday night, soundly.
